He-Brew [22 Sep 2006|09:45pm]

cityskip

New York: A company that started out as a joke celebrates 10 years in business.

Founder Jeremy Cowan says that starting out, he and his friends just thought it would be fun for Jews to have their own beer and brewed up something called "He-Brew". Ten years later, with two million bottles sold, it's not a joke anymore.

Cowan says he likes the beer, but wouldn't want to abandon the inside joke that started it all, the punch line being "don't pass out, pass over."

Coca-Cola Central Japan Co. began operating a methane fermentation system at its Tokai plant in Aichi Prefecture in November 2004. The system produces energy from waste materials such as coffee grounds, used tea leaves and wastewater sludge. This is the first attempt to introduce such a system in the Japanese soft drink industry, and is being carried out as a joint research project of the company and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, an agency of the Japanese national government.

Eight sent to asylum after horror exorcism killings in Mexico [18 Dec 2005|08:26am]

AP , MEXICO CITY
Saturday, Dec 17, 2005,Page 6

A judge ordered eight adults committed to a prison psychiatric facility for 40 years on Thursday for the grisly exorcism slayings of a seven-month-old baby and a 13-year-old girl in a remote mountain community in western Mexico.

The brutality of the Dec. 7 killings -- the baby was hacked to death and dismembered while the teenager killed with stones -- has shocked Mexico. Officials say the killers were the victims' own parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, who had become convinced the girls were demons or possessed by the devil.

They carried out the ritual slayings, accompanied by prayers, the lighting of candles and the sacrifice of farm animals.

A ninth suspect -- an aunt described as the alleged instigator of the slayings -- remains at a psychiatric hospital in the state capital, reportedly in an even worse state of mental illness.

Judge Ana Maria Raya Razo, who ordered the commitment, said that members of the extended family had acknowledged carrying out killings. They said they were convinced they had to save themselves from demons.

"The psychiatric testimony showed that they were suffering from a delusional psychotic state, with paranoia and hallucinations," Razo said from Penjamo, the Guanajuato state township where the killings occurred.

"For example, they said they saw animals, demons in the girls," Razo said, citing testimony from the case.

"They said they had animal's faces, the faces of monkeys, that they had demons inside and had to be killed in order to for them [the adults] to save themselves," she added.

According to Rodolfo Gonzalez, spokesman for the Guanajuato Attorney General's Office, police were tipped off to the killings by an anonymous phone call.

They traveled on foot -- the only way into the remote, three-house hamlet where the family lived -- and found the baby girl mutilated, and the body of 13-year-old Juana Perez Frausto tied to a stake and battered to death.

The baby, Maria Elena Perez Gutierrez, had had her arms and legs cut off, and her belly cut open. The suspects later claimed that they saw animal excrement instead of her intestines.

About 10 children and adults -- members of the same extended family of about 30 -- were found locked into a house, where they had been confined for three days, apparently because they too were suspected of being possessed.

According to police reports, goats, pigs and chickens had been sacrificed at the site.

Ismael Gonzalez, private secretary to the mayor of Penjamo, located 290km west of Mexico City, said the suspects were known as "a normal family."

"This is the first case like this here ... this is not what people in Penjamo do," Gonzalez said.

He said that Amalia Perez Hernandez, who alleged started the hysteria after visiting a faith healer, had become catatonic and had been taken to a psychiatric hospital after she was detained.

The suspects -- Reinaldo Perez Hernandez and Hermelinda Frausto Lopez, the parents of the 13-year-old -- and the parents of the baby, -- helped kill their daughters, but were found not responsible for murder due to insanity.

Mbabane - A drinking and dancing celebration by the king's daughter shocked a Swazi traditionalist enough for him to deliver a spanking to the teenage princess, and cast a pall over Swaziland's annual royal bride-choosing rites.
THe King's daughter Princess Sikhanyiso, a 17-year-old who was rarely seen in the umchwasho tassels herself, threw Friday's party with loud music and alcoholic drinks to celebrate the end of the chastity rite.

"We were so shocked that the girls decided to turn the reed dance ceremony into a drinking and dancing spree," Ntsonjeni Dlamini, who is in charge of overseeing traditional affairs, said on Monday.

Dlamini said he was compelled by tradition to beat the celebrating girls - including the king's daughter - with a stick.

This is an article on the child exploitation unit in the Toronto Police Department - it is a long sad article, but there was one really interesting point:

On one wall is a "Star Trek" poster with investigators' faces substituted for the Starship Enterprise crew. But even that alludes to a dark fact of their work: All but one of the offenders they have arrested in the last four years was a hard-core Trekkie.

Det. Constable Warren Bulmer slips on a Klingon sash and shield they confiscated in a recent raid. "It has something to do with a fantasy world where mutants and monsters have power and where the usual rules don't apply," Bulmer reflects. "But beyond that, I can't really explain it."

I'm losing faith in humanity. [31 Mar 2005|10:43pm]

Warning: The content in this story may be offensive to viewers. Video for this story is no longer available.

(July 10) -- It's a new form of adult entertainment, and men are paying thousands of dollars to shoot naked women with paint ball guns. They're coming to Las Vegas to do it. This bizarre new sport has captured the attention of people around the world, but Channel 8 Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell is the only person who has interviewed the game's founder.

George Evanthes has never been hunting. "Originally I'm from New York. What am I going to hunt? Squirrels? Someone's cats? Someone's dogs? I don't think so," said Evanthes. Now that he's living in Las Vegas, he's finally getting his chance to put on his camouflage, grab a rifle and pull the trigger. But what's in his scope may surprise you. He's not hunting ducks or deer, he's hunting naked women.

"I've done this three times," says Nicole, one of the three women allowing themselves to be shot at. Two other women, Gidget and Skyler, claim they have done this seven times.

Hunting for Bambi is the brainchild of Michael Burdick. Men pay anywhere from $5000 to $10,000 for the chance to come to the middle of the desert to shoot what they call "Bambis" with a paint ball gun. Burdick says men have come from as far away as Germany. The men get a video tape of their hunt to take home and show their friends.

Burdick says safety is a concern, but the women are not allowed to wear protective gear -- only tennis shoes.

Burdick says hunters are told not to shoot any woman above the chest, but he admits not all hunters follow the rules. "The main goal is to be as true to nature as possible. I don't go deer hunting and see a deer with a football helmet on so I don't want to see one on my girl either," said Burdick.

The paint balls that come out of the guns travel at about 200 miles-per-hour. Getting hit with one stings with clothes on, and when they hit bare flesh, they are powerful enough to draw blood.

Evanthes shoots one woman and says, "I got the one with the biggest rack."

Gidget is the one who took the paint ball shot to the rear. She says, "It hurt. It really hurt. I didn't think it was going to be that bad." When asked if she cried she says,"yeah, a little bit."

So why does a woman agree to strip down and run around the desert dodging paint balls? Nicole says it's good money. "I mean it's $2,500 if you don't get hit. You try desperately not to and it's $1000 if you do," said Nicole.

The men and women say this is all good, clean fun, but in Part 2 of this special report, reporter LuAnne Sorrell speaks with a psychologist who says for some men playing out this sexual aggression may lead to other more violent acts against women.
